My Fourth Act

Small Volunteering:
I've found that not all volunteering is glamorous, big, or gets a big thanks. I've found that many small things can be a big help. So I'll be posting some pics of me doing small acts of help. If you want to do this sort of thing, go to the elementary, middle, or high school in your town and ask to volunteer. It should be very easy. :)

Remember: Sometimes it's not about THE BIG PICTURE because mostly it's the smaller things that make the picture the most BEAUTIFUL!

My Third Act

The Post-it Plot:
I have been thinking about new ways to spread the seeds of kindness when I came across this article called The Post-It Act. Of course, I was intrigued. So I read the article, and its about a woman that was very insecure, and went to take an exam (a really tough one, at that), and went to use the restroom.

This woman had a major case of butterflies, so she pulled out her post-it notes that she always kept with her, and wrote: "You are beautiful". Then she put it on the mirror. Instantly she felt better, and she had an idea.

After that, everywhere she went... into wal-mart restrooms, into school restrooms, even in books, she would write on Post-it notes, then stick it there.

Soon, she was blogging about it. Then she realized that other people were posting notes, which is when she realized that this act needed a new blog.

Think this makes no difference? Think again. At my highschool, after I began posting these notes, I found numerous girls putting up more notes! And it just spread from there. In just last year (2010-2011), a smaller district within my school had an assembly and huge act with posters and tons of stickies all devoted to making people feel good. And it works. Still dubious? Try it out.

My Second Act

These Are a few pictures of me on my second act: Plants For Habitat For Humanity. I have been taking and separating plant shoots of a fairly expensive plant called epimedium and soon we will give these plants to Habitat for Humanity. Even though this job happens in very hot weather, I really welcome that warm and fuzzy feeling that volunteering brings.

My First Act

Okay, so for my first volunteer act, I signed up for being a junior camp counselor at Camp Invention this summer. I am on my second day. As you can see, the kids I was helping are all taking apart items. This "class" is called Icaninvent. All the kids bring items to take apart and make an invention out of the parts. The kids adored that class. Basically a junior camp counselor watches over their grade group of kids throughout the day, leading them from "class" to "class", keeping them quiet, helping the "professors" (or teachers) teach, leading the games for "Base Camp" (which is basically recess), and keeping the kids occupied. I hope to accomplish helping the kids learn and love science and math, while helping the organizers maintain order. So far, I've really begun to get used to helping out, what keeps the kids quiet and focused, and things like that. I think the kids are really enjoying the camp, even the ones who, at first, didn't want to come. Below, you can see a few pictures from the second class called Global Games. In this class the kids learned about old versions of modern games like the old version of soccer or "Football", as many countries call it. The kids would make the ball and play with it in a game. After that, you can see a few pictures from morning activities. All the kids used teamwork to try to build the highest cup tower. They had some fun with that. I guess in the end, even though I'm thoroughly wiped and in need of a good snack, the pure fact that I'm volunteering really leaves me with a feeling of accomplishment. It feels great, like the happiness chocolate gives you. I love it.
